- Game jam gewonnen
private void FixedUpdate()
{
horizontal = Input.GetAxisRaw("Horizontal");
rb.velocity = new Vector2(horizontal * speed, rb.velocity.y);
}
private bool isGrounded()
{
return Physics2D.OverlapCircle(groundCheck.position, 0.3f, groundLayer);
}
private void Flip()
{
if (isFacingRight && horizontal < 0f || !isFacingRight && horizontal > 0f)
{
isFacingRight = !isFacingRight;
Vector3 localScale = transform.localScale;
localScale.x *= -1f;
transform.localScale = localScale;
}
}

- Won the game jam
Background The game was made for a game jam in my spare time. And we won the game jam.
The game It's a puzzle game where you press buttons to move the blocks so you can navigate through the level. The game has 8 levels, and when you die you stay in the level you were in.
My role I made the movement of the player (the blue block) and made sure the in-game UI works. I also made the sound effects and drew the player myself.
Tight controls for a puzzle game
In a puzzle game the player has to be able to judge exactly where the blue block will end up. So I set the velocity directly on the Rigidbody2D: the movement goes through physics, but without sliding. A small circle below the block checks whether it's on the ground, and the block turns to face the direction it moves in.
private void FixedUpdate()
{
horizontal = Input.GetAxisRaw("Horizontal");
rb.velocity = new Vector2(horizontal * speed, rb.velocity.y);
}
private bool isGrounded()
{
return Physics2D.OverlapCircle(groundCheck.position, 0.3f, groundLayer);
}
private void Flip()
{
if (isFacingRight && horizontal < 0f || !isFacingRight && horizontal > 0f)
{
isFacingRight = !isFacingRight;
Vector3 localScale = transform.localScale;
localScale.x *= -1f;
transform.localScale = localScale;
}
}
Looking back I liked that we only had 3 days to make this game. It gives you a kind of pressure to perform, because it has to be finished on time and still look good. We were free to interpret the theme "Rising and Falling" and come up with something for it. Besides the short time frame there was also pressure because we were competing against several other teams for the win. We were allowed to use copyrighted material, which seemed easy at first, but turned out differently in practice. There is a lot on Google, but never quite what you need. So I worked with what I could find, but I hope to create more things myself in the future.
